Illumination is releasing Sing 2 next year around the holidays and this sequel adds new members to the cast. Those members include Bono, Pharrell Williams and Halsey.
Sing was released in 2016 and it centered around Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey). He tries to save his theater from being shut down by having a singing competition. This announcement caused several individuals to overcome their own struggles and sing their hearts out. Many of these individuals will return to reprise their roles.
Reese Witherspoon as Rosita; Taron Egerton as Johnny; Scarlett Johansson as Ash; Tori Kelly as Meena and Nick Kroll as Gunter.
The first star that will appear in the movie will be Bono, the lead vocalist of U2. Bono will be voicing Clay Calloway, a lion rock star who has become isolated after losing his wife. This will be the singer’s first time voicing a character and singing in an animated film. However, his music has been featured in other movies such as Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.
Next, there is Pharrell Williams. He will play Alfonso, an elephant ice-cream-truck owner that becomes a love interest for Meena. Pharrell has worked with Illumination before. His song “Happy” was featured in Despicable Me 2 and it became an instant hit. Basically, he will entertain the moviegoers.
Then there is Halsey. She will be voicing Porsche Crystal, the teenage daughter of the entertainment mogul Jimmy Crystal. Halsey is known not only for her music, but for her appearances in film and TV as well. She starred in Saturday Night Live, A Star Is Born and The Voice.
According to Deadline, the movie will be about Buster and the group setting their sights on putting on a show at the Crystal Tower Theater. In order for that dream to come true, they would have to impress the egotistical Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale). Crystal would let them perform if they got Clay Calloway to play in the show as well.
During an interview with Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, he explained what the movie was truly about. He said:
“Sing 2 transcends the animation genre, immersing audiences in a fully realized world populated by complex characters, each with bold aspirations and relatable challenges. We are thrilled that the Sing franchise attracts such exceptional talent, and we are delighted to announce this extraordinary cast. The film is a musical celebration of the unrelenting pursuit of one’s dreams, no matter how large the challenges that stand in your way. At its core this movie speaks to the power of optimism and belief.”
Results from the original movie received positive feedback and Golden Globe nominations. Now with the new cast, we’ll find out if it will be another success.
Sing 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 22, 2021.
