Review: ‘Alicia’ By Alicia Keys

It’s new music Friday and there are new albums to listen to. Singer-songwriter Alicia Keys has dropped her new album Alicia today and it was a nice change.

Alicia Keys is well known for her music. She has recorded chart-topping hits like Fallin, No One and Girl on Fire. In her new album she has a different sound. Specifically, she has a more subtle soul in her voice and the emotions go deeper.

The first song that captured my attention was Love Looks Better. On this track she has a mix of pop and soul in her voice. Her voice and the piano playing had me engaged. Then her soulful voice was heard again in A Perfect Way To Die. This ballad is about a grieving mother who lost her son by cops, according to NME. Her ballad and the message in the song had me captivated.

Keys also collaborated with other artists for her new collection. There was 3 Hour Drive with Sampha, Me x 7 with Tierra Whack, So Done with Khalid and Show Me Love with Miguel. Each collaboration was a pleasant addition to the album.

The artist is traditionally a pianist, but there was some guitar in this new album. The guitar playing came from Underdog and Gramercy Park. Hearing the guitar playing and her voice pleased me. It was a nice change for the artist to switch her instruments.

This was initially supposed to be released six months earlier, but the pandemic happened. She gives people hope and joy with her self-titled new album. In addition, she will be on tour in 2021 so her fans will have something to look forward too.

Bottom line, Alicia by Alicia Keys is an album that will make you feel good.
