Just when you thought he wouldn’t put the black cape back on…he will. Yes, Ben Affleck is set to return as Batman in the upcoming Flash movie.
The Pearl Harbor star will return as the dark knight in a cameo role. But, he will not be the only Batman in that movie. Michael Keaton will also be the caped crusader. Many of us remember him as Batman in the 1989 Tim Burton film and now the Flash (Ezra Miller) will have two Batmen in his journey.
Affleck made his first debut as Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. After that he made an appearance in a mid-credit scene of Suicide Squad. He then made his ‘final’ appearance as Batman in Justice League.
After Justice League came into theaters, Affleck decided to step away from the role of Gotham’s vigilante. Now Robert Pattinson took the mantle and is set to be the lead in The Batman coming out next year.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Andy Muschietti stated that Affleck’s Batman will play an important part of Barry Allen’s story. He said:
“He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before. It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”
In addition to the Flash movie, Affleck will be back when Zack Snyder’s Justice League comes to HBO Max in 2021. We’ll see how that version of the movie plays out.
Having Ben Affleck return as Batman will be an interesting choice. Having him back in the Flash movie will be something to look forward too.
