Remember when British actor Henry Cavill was done playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU)? Well, now he’s saying that he wishes to return to the franchise.
(WARNING: The following content contains spoilers for those who are not caught up with the movies in the DCEU.)
When we last left Cavill as Superman, he came back to life in Justice League in 2017. Superman was back and the mustache did not come back, which didn’t please most people. Despite the changes in that film, Cavill gave me a memorable performance as the Man of Steel over the years.
Cavill made his first appearance in the DCEU with Man of Steel in 2013. He gave me a worthy performance as the kryptonian survivor and an engaging story to the hero he became. After I got to see his origin story, he went on to work with other heroes.
In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Superman met Batman (Ben Affleck) and they did not start off as super friends. Eventually, they ended up working together to save their world. However, the kryptonian sacrificed himself to save those that he loved.
Director Zack Snyder cut out several scenes in the Justice League movie and the cast have demanded that they release the “Snyder Cut.” Once the word got out, the fans have wanted that “Snyder Cut” as well. However, Cavill did not take part in that support. Instead, he decided that he wants to have a new adventure for his character.
“I’d like to delve more into the aspect of Superman [that] we traditionally know, coupled with where we left him with Man of Steel,” Cavill explained in Entertainment Tonight. “It’s the hero who is trying to exist in a world where people may say he’s not relevant anymore — where, actually, he’s extraordinarily relevant and it’s him coming to terms with that and becoming that relevance and showing people that hope does exist without it being too chocolate box.”
Although he plans to have a sequel to Man of Steel, Cavill has another role to play. He will be Geralt of Rivia in the upcoming Netflix series, The Witcher. This series is based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski.
In this role, Geralt is a monster hunter who tries to find his place in a world filled with unimaginable creatures. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly dangerous world together, according to Entertainment Tonight.
With this series coming out people will get to see whole different side of him. Instead of a kryptonian superhero, we will get to see a hunter fighting monsters and deadly beasts.
So before Henry Cavill can put his red cape back on, we can watch him as Geralt in The Witcher coming out Dec. 20 on Netflix.
